The goal of our trip to provide our students with the opportunity to participate in engaging and academically-based STEM education, heritage, and cultural programs. In addition, we hope to inspire students’ awareness of career opportunities and to dispel some of the myths and stereotypes about these fields and the persons entering them while preparing them for college and career readiness.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 29

This grant provided transportation for the Girlfriends of Thurgood Marshall to attend the Zora Neale Hurston Festival in Eatonville, Florida. The girls were exposed to culture, literature, and STEM. Students were able to visit exhibits to learn about the history of Eatonville, FL as well as the background of Zora Neale Hurston by visiting her museum. The girls were able to participate in STEM activities specifically designed for girls. They were introduced to entrepreneurship, graphic design, software development, and web design.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of our trip to provide our students with the opportunity to participate in engaging and academically-based STEM education, heritage, and cultural programs. In addition, we hope to inspire students’ awareness of career opportunities and to dispel some of the myths and stereotypes about these fields and the persons entering them while preparing them for college and career readiness. 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will have an opportunity to add their creative expression to a large piece of framed canvas; Students will the opportunity to participate in a STEM infused curriculum station; tour Zora Neale Hurston Museum; meet/question famous authors.
 

 

Benefits to my students

To provide my students with opportunities to learn about careers in STEM and expose them to cultural and heritage based programs.

Our students include a variety of students who are culturally and academically diverse; we serve ESE students as well.
