Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

Thanks to your generous donation, two of my classes were able to benefit from this grant!

KUBO was first introduced to my 2nd Grade STEM Academy. We meet once a week for an hour after school. We focus on hands-on engineering problems to ensure we are prepared for the real world. KUBO was the perfect addition to STEM Academy as scholars were able to use their knowledge of the engineering design process to code KUBO through various challenges.

After the successful implentation of KUBO with my 2nd Grade STEM Academy students, I decided to introduce KUBO to my first grade scholars. With the interface of KUBO being very basic, it was very simple for 6 and 7 year olds to pick up the concepts of coding through lights and colors.

Thank you for allowing my students new experiences to master: enginnering, technology, teamwork, leadership and colloboration!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the PCS STEM Academy program is to increase student achievement by engaging students in innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics so that students are able to become globally competitive. The implementation of computer programming in my primary STEM Academy at Starkey Elementary will increase student knowledge in the areas of; coding as a universal language, problem solving, computational thinking and the exploration of job opportunities.

What will be done with my students

Students will have the ability to work in small teams to see how the basic fundamentals of coding can go from visual representation to basic programming as the robot moves across the game. Teams will be challenged to put together tiles to create a code for the KUBO bot to complete using a scenario map. These teams will learn the basics of coding while at the same time, assess their knowledge by seeing how well KUBO completes the course while manipulating obstacles. Teams will then enhance their communication and teamwork skills while sharing their successes, barriers that they experienced and any problem-solving tips for other teams to utilize.

Benefits to my students

Coding is collaborative, and creative! It’s designed to inspire students to continue learning how technology can solve real-world problems, enhance the quality of life and challenge them to think beyond their classroom walls. These coding activities will create and foster a love of computer science and life-long STEM learners! This provides opportunities for my students to conduct hands-on investigations, explore STEM careers and improve team building and leadership skills.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. The school offers many after-school programs at no-cost due to the family’s inability to pay. My 2nd grade STEM Academy is a no-cost after-school program that is offered to all 2nd grade students with no academic or demographic requirements.
