Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Makerspace at Melrose resulted in engaged students who were learning in creative ways during library time. Classroom demands are more rigorous than ever and students need a creative outlet. The donation allowed students to use their creativity by doing coding activities, building with magnetic tiles, studying science through microscopes, drawing with animation kits, and learning through exploration. They also participated in various STEM activities that helped foster a deeper love of learning and attending school.

This project has helped our library become more of a 21st century gathering space that encourages more than just reading. This is particularly important at our school because of the extended day. Makerspace at Melrose gives the students an opportunity to think outside of the box and break the constraints of traditional classrooms. We are creating problem solvers.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase student engagement, knowledge, and performance in STEAM education through Makerspace activities in the Melrose Media Center.

What will be done with my students

Students have the opportunity to come to the Media Center once a week with their class, as well as individually or in small groups throughout the day. While in the Media Center, they check out books and/or participate in various Makerspace activities.

Makerspace is hugely important for 21st century learning. Makerspace activities allow students to explore, create, and learn in a way that is unique to them. Examples of Makerspace activities can be as high tech as coding robots and creating multimedia projects to something simple like building with various materials (including Legos, Kin'ex, and even cardboard) and creating bookmarks.

This request would fund more Makerspace activity kits that will build a focus on STEAM activities, such as kits to build motors, electrical circuits, and coding activities.

Benefits to my students

Very few students learn to their highest potential in a traditional classroom setting. Makerspace is about creating new pathways for children to grow their interests. Makerspace allows children to take charge of their learning and be engaged in activities that use creativity to improve stamina and teach the power of perseverance through trial and error.

Describe the Students

Melrose Elementary School has over 400 scholars, of which 100 percent are economically disadvantaged. Melrose is also a Title 1 school. We have a wide range of learners, all of which would benefit from this project.

Budget Narrative

The funds will be used to purchase various STEAM kits that can be used repeatedly. The funds will be spent at Amazon and Scholastic.
