Our goal is to infuse science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics into our VPK students’ daily experience. Our class is a brand-new addition to an amazing School, and because it is new, we must build our program to ensure the students this year and in years to come have the tools needed to fully explore their environment and nurture their problem solving and critical thinking skills. VPK curriculum consist of themed units and in these units, there are specific standards that must be met. Our goal is to provide fun and exciting experiences to assist in meeting these standards and promote a love of learning.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

At the beginning of our school year, only 1 child out of 20 was proficient in mathematics for Kindergarten. Due to our sponsors generosity, our class is at 90% proficiency for mathematics at a Kindergarten level! Even though 2 of our 20 are still below the expectation level, they have improved dramatically, and all of this is due to the STEM items we received from the grant. We do not have a formal assessment to test for improvement in Science, but we have noticed that their enthusiasm and interest in building, shapes, and construction has increased intensely.

The items in this grant are reusable, which means for years to come more students will be able to benefit from this grant. We cannot say enough how much we appreciate your help in making learning fun!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to infuse science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics into our VPK students’ daily experience. Our class is a brand-new addition to an amazing School, and because it is new, we must build our program to ensure the students this year and in years to come have the tools needed to fully explore their environment and nurture their problem solving and critical thinking skills. VPK curriculum consist of themed units and in these units, there are specific standards that must be met. Our goal is to provide fun and exciting experiences to assist in meeting these standards and promote a love of learning.

What will be done with my students

In VPK, the curriculum is based off learning through play. It has been proved time and time again that at this age level, children learn more and are better able to retain knowledge when it is done in fun, meaningful experiences and activities. These experiences allow their still developing brain to build synapses between neurons—in other words, we get to help build their amazing brains! We will infuse the 5 domains of STEAM in our curriculum, so we will be doing a variety of science activities and explorations, technology experiences, engineering opportunities to build increasingly complex structures, art materials to encourage creativity and fun math activities to develop a love of math. Most of these items will be permanently integrated into the curriculum, while some of the art items will be used until we run out of materials. With this grant, we will be able to conduct a variety of experiments throughout the years with our students to encourage the expansion of scientific knowledge with a hands-on approach. Some experiments will be focused on living things, such as the life cycle of plants, frogs and butterflies. Other experiences will include problem solving scenarios to encourage creative thinking.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit in a multitude of ways, including academically, emotionally, and socially. STEAM will expose our students to creative processes, allow meaningful collaboration, increase critical thinking skills and begin to navigate their own unique way to problem solve. All our students, in this year and the years to come, will get to opportunity for hands-on learning and to explore their own creativity. Put together, these benefits will expand their minds and build lifelong learners that will ask questions and seek to find those answers.

Describe the Students

We have 20 wonderful students that make up our school family. They are an extremely diverse group and come from various backgrounds and ethnicity. We are located at a Title 1 School and will have 20 students in our class every year. Each child is at their own developmental level and we as teachers have the responsibility to foster and encourage growth in each of them. Many of our students come with their own challenges, including home life, social skills, behaviors and academic disabilities. We know that through play, through hands-on activities, each of our students will have the chance to thrive.

Budget Narrative

We will use these kits, activities and materials to encourage and enhance active engagement in our classroom. These items will be used to help build and create life-long learners.
