Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 48

ALL 48 students in the 2018-2019 gifted program received funding from this grant which cut the cost of their admission fee to 50% of its original suggested price. Additionally, 4 students in the program received 100% funding for their admission due to their family's financial situation. The program, Shen Yun, was an absolutely amazing artistic, musical, and cultural performance that kept the students mezmerized for two hours and directly tied into the curriculum of Ancient China that we had been studying that year. Students dressed up in their finest clothing to attend this once in a lifetime special event at the elegant Mahaffey Theater. Our school, and the audience surrounding us at the Mahaffey Theater matinee performance, raved at how beautiful the children looked and how respectful and well-mannered they all were. The students beamed with pride at being invited to attend such an event!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To allow my Title 1, underprivileged, Gifted students to attend a show at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg that directly supports our Unit of Study this year on Ancient China. This would be an experience they may not otherwise ever have.

What will be done with my students

Currently, we are studying all aspects of Ancient China and how their civilization impacted the rest of the world. Part of this Unit of Study focuses on the people and their culture. It explains how feelings, emotions, topics, and experiences were shared with both each other and other people in the world through song and dance, a universal language around the world. This show would bring to life these concepts and allow my students to experience another culture beyond their own, yet allow them to see how their own culture was impacted by the Ancient Chinese Civilization so long ago.

Benefits to my students

As underprivileged students, my students do not frequently get to experience cultural shows such as this. This Shen Yun Chinese Dancing Show would allow my students to experience another culture beyond theirs. It would allow them to see how music and dance is a universal way of sharing experiences with others from around the world who may live differently from them. And, it would bring to life the people and culture of China that we are studying about this year as part of our Gifted Unit of Study.

Describe the Students

I teach underprivileged Gifted Students in grades 1-5. They are very intelligent, think differently than many of their classmates, and typically fall in the top 95% of the population when compared to their like-age peers. They are creative, are critical thinkers, and are highly emotional. They are aware of various problems that are affecting our world and often ask how they can make a difference now, as a child.
