Social studies/History is embedded with ELA for 5th grade. However, there is not enough resources to supplement all the misconceptions and learning for my scholars to really understand and be prepared for middle school. My grant monies will be used to promote the social studies, science, and ELA standards as well as learning their own history through critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity/innovation. The project will increase student engagement by utilizing high interest activities in a fun and creative way.

This project aligns with Florida standards in social studies, science, and ELA.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Social studies/History is embedded with ELA for 5th grade. However, there is not enough resources to supplement all the misconceptions and learning for my scholars to really understand and be prepared for middle school. My grant monies will be used to promote the social studies, science, and ELA standards as well as learning their own history through critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity/innovation. The project will increase student engagement by utilizing high interest activities in a fun and creative way.

This project aligns with Florida standards in social studies, science, and ELA.

What will be done with my students

My students and I will be using this resource as a supplement to what is already provided in both Social Studies and Science both in print and online. We will be incorporating skills and strategies to further our understanding of the standards through close reads of the articles, thinking maps of the content and projects that relate to content.

Students will also develop research and media skills using primary and secondary sources and be able to use domain specific vocabulary to determine meaning of the text,

Benefits to my students

Students will become more engaged in the learning process as they are given opportunities to make choices in real life situations. They will learn to work in teams to create inquiry based projects.

They will relate to historic and science related references that are familiar to them locally and learn about the cultural diversity within Florida as well as abroad.

Describe the Students

We are title 1 school. Over 70% of our students are free and reduced. I have a wide range of abilities in my classroom. I also have the ESE cluster. Which means several of my students are receiving push in and pullout support. I also have students that are very high and receive enrichment support.

Budget Narrative

The budget will cover the cost of two subscriptions for a set of 22 students. One subscription of Social Studies Weekly and the other is Science Weekly.
