Increase STEM related materials in my students homes to deepen their understanding of how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be found in everyday text. My hope for this grant would be that by my students embracing STEM ideas and text, this will increase their interest to explore fields in STEM in the future. The more that I can expose my students to STEM, even in a math classroom, the more they might want to explore STEM in the future.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

My students had so much fun with this project.  At first, they were a little confused as to why a math teacher was asking them to read STEM books within class however that quickly changed.  As you can see from the pictures below, they would ask to read the books in class before taking them home to preview the book.  My students were apprehensive at first to read to their family as they were not used to sitting down and reading so that took them some time to get used to.  After a few times, students would come in during the middle of me teaching to change out their book buddy bags.  They couldn't wait to read another book with their families.  It was great as their math teacher, watching students tip toe into my classroom to change out their book buddy bags with smiles on their faces.  I had teachers come to me saying that students were asking them if they could read with their teacher during lunch and write their journal reflection.  Not all of my students have family at home as some are homeless and living in shelters, so they would ask teachers if they could read with them along with guidance counselors and office aids.  It was great to see how much a book can bring a smile to a student’s face.  I will continue this next year as the results were amazing.  Students became more confident as a learner along with building relationships within their family and friends.  Thank you so much for funding this grant!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Increase STEM related materials in my students homes to deepen their understanding of how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be found in everyday text. My hope for this grant would be that by my students embracing STEM ideas and text, this will increase their interest to explore fields in STEM in the future. The more that I can expose my students to STEM, even in a math classroom, the more they might want to explore STEM in the future.

What will be done with my students

If I receive this grant, I will have over 30 book buddy bags each containing a different STEM related read a loud along with a composition book. Students will select a book buddy bag to read with their families which relate to STEM. These books will range from board books or hard cover books, depending on the age of who they are reading to. Inside the book buddy bag will be a composition notebook where students will complete an assignment relating the book to STEM. My students will be given a variety of ways to complete the assignment which allows students to express their thoughts; some ideas: comic strips, poetry, art pieces, essays, book reports and board games. Families will be encourages to help with the assignment to start connecting families and STEM. So many of the students do not share time with their families and my hope is that this might help to bring families together through educational materials.

Benefits to my students

My hope for this grant money would be to increase the time my students reading with their families along with increasing their understanding of STEM related ideas. My students are very interested in STEM however have very little reading materials at home to help foster their interest. Many read a louds have STEM related ideas whether it is understanding the world around them or fixing a problem within the story. I want to help my students find a love for reading STEM related materials and promote conversations within the classroom after reading these books.

Describe the Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and religions. A majority of my students are on free or reduced breakfast and lunch. My students enjoy school and want to learn as much as they can.
