Students will be immersed in the world of STEM, through creating a climate that encourages and activates students critical thinking skills and ability to independent solve real world problems. A mobile STEM lab is the ultimate goal, where students in my classroom who range from grade K-5 based on the day can interact and apply STEM thinking to their learning. The mobile lab, which will be located in my classroom will contain a variety of critical thinking tasks, games, building materials, and response cards in order to connect everyday learning to the STEM world. Students will have many opportunities to learn and explore areas of direct STEM interest including jobs, skills, and subjects. They will They will have opportunities to work with Legos, logic games, builders, STEM imagination kits, roller coaster challenges and many other hands on materials to build bridges, simple machines, why decisions are made, consequences, and robotics. Students will also learn about the STEM redesign process and apply that directly to their learning situation and/or challenge. Specific challenges will be given to students on a monthly basis with a specific focus to help them grow their stem knowledge and understanding. STEM activities enhance what is being learned in the classroom as well as what they are personally interested in, too hopefully one day find their niche. This is a great opportunity for my gifted students and will give them an opportunity to find their love of STEM learning.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 54

My students are so incredibly excited and thankful for all the materials that have been added to my classroom to support STEM thinking. They eargerly look forward to the days when we break out our critical thinking activities and use them individually or along with and ELA style lesson/activity. Many of the games and activities are used daily and some are used monthly. Upon the completion of a math unit, students use their inductive and deductive thinking skills to complete math (critical thinking and real-world problem solving) activities. A favorite is Q-BITZ and roller coaster challenge. Students love to be challenged differently and I am grateful to give them the opportunity. They can take what they learn in my gifted classroom and applyl it to their general education classroom and their real lives outside of school.

What will be done with my students

Prior to jumping into specific STEM challenges, students will learn and practice their critical thinking skills. This is an important aspect of being a successful problem solver. They will work on logic puzzles such as Rush Hour and Q-bitz while also bringing in the math component with the prime game and geometry building. Geometry building will include understanding and building of 3-D shapes as well as creating buildings and structures out of those shapes and testing their durability during different seasons. Problem solving games increase student perseverance when things get tough and build their out of the box thinking. Creative thinkers bring new ideas to the field of STEM and that will be highly focused on during this school year. Students will be participating in monthly STEM challenges geared towards a specific concept. Challenges will include how to build a bridge through trees, since we have a yearlong focus on the rainforest; learning all about roller coasters, how they work, where they are found, and build one of their own; and bring other real world problems to life. Students will get as much hands-on problem solving that is possible within the school day! 

 

Benefits to my students

Students will gain and have a deeper understanding of concepts that affect the real world. Giving students a variety of STEM activities, based on their interests will engage them in many different ways. This will give students a positive outlook on school, science, math, technology, and engineering while guiding them into their future jobs and careers.  

 

Describe the Students

The students who would benefit from these materials are AMAZING! They are kind, curious, and willing to learn. They desperately look forward to the gifted day and want to know when the next STEM challenge/activity will occur and come with an eagerness to learn. They love to experiment and get hands on with learning! I only want to provide many more of these opportunities. The students in my gifted program continue to grow. As of right now there are 48 students ranging from grades K-5. This number will continue to grow as more gifted students enter my classroom throughout the year. We are a low income school with free and reduced lunch and breakfast for all students. The students would appreciate and be thankful for any donations and materials that allow them to have fun while learning. 

 

Budget Narrative

The items provided on my list are to create a STEM lab in my classroom. Materials include carts and baskets to house materials, a variety of STEM challenges and materials, STEM books and resources, and logic/problem solving games to prepare students to meet and exceed challenges.
