Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 66

Our classroom was so delighted to have received the folder, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, and highlighters! The highlighters were kept in "toll boxes" on the student tables to use to highlight important information in their math and science journals. When kids learned that I had folders and spiral notebooks for them they did not hesitate to ask when they needed a new one. I was impressed that many of them did not ask for one just because. They waited until they truly needed a replacement one before asking. Having a variety of colors was very helpful as well. The kids felt great about being able to pick a favorite color from the multiple options.

The notebook paper came in very handy for both math and science classes. I was able to provide the paper to the students for lessons and activities. Again, the kids were great, they were very good about only using what they needed and not being wasteful.

As my school continues to move in a lower socio-economic state, I hope I will be able to offer these supplies again in the future. It is amazing how much the kids appreciate it and is one less thing for them to worry about on a daily academic basis! Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Through this grant I hope to receive the necessary supplies to assist my students in becoming organized, self-directed learners in math and science classes, reaching academic successes with these necessary tools.

What will be done with my students

Students from low socioeconomic families will be provided the necessary supplies to organize themselves in math and science classes. Folders will be used to store handouts and consumable textbook pages resulting in an organized resource for learning. Spiral notebooks will be used for journal entries when recording new information and reflecting on their learning. Highlighters will be utilized for identifying key points in their archived resources.

Benefits to my students

By assisting the students with these necessary supplies, they will learn to become organized, find information quickly and easily in their notebooks and journals, improve their study skills, and become self-directed learners. Students will show increases in their academic scores as a result of these improved learning skills achieved by providing the basic necessities.

Describe the Students

The IB program at Sanderlin has been traditionally a high performing magnet school with affluent families. However, this year brings new challenges. Students of all ability levels are now able to be part of the program. With this change, our student demographics has changed. We have many more students from struggling families who are unable to provide the basic supplies for school. These students are still held at the same level of expectation, but lack the basic necessities to organize themselves and be prepared for learning hindering their opportunity for success.

Budget Narrative

With a budget of $100, this will allow me to buy approximately 20 3-prong folders, 20 Spiral Notebooks, 6 packs of paper, and 20 highlighters.
