Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

Students were required to complete construction of trebuchets and catapults. The build was preceded by students giving presentations on the history of siege engines in the middle ages and lessons on simple and complex machines, work, and force. Students graphed outcomes of trebuchets and catapults and compare the differences in results of the two designs.  

 

Through combining mathematics and history with science, technology, and engineering students utilized numerous skills from multiple disciplines in a relevant and rigorous project.

 

Through discussion and surveys students stated their interest in utilizing their knowledge in hands-on activities as opposed working through problems such as those typically found in text books. Students were able to see, feel, and interact with concepts such as Newton’s Laws rather than merely read and write about them.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will be required to complete construction of trebuchets and catapults. The build will be preceded by students giving presentations on the history of siege engines in the middle ages and lessons on simple and complex machines, work, and force. Students will graph outcomes of trebuchets and catapults and compare the differences in results of the two designs.  

 

Benefits to my students

Students will combine mathematics and history with science, technology, and engineering in a project-based lesson. Through utilizing math skills in a relevant and rigorous project students will employ and discover the applications of science, engineering, algebra, and geometry through practical application.

Budget Narrative

A total of 50 trebuchet kits and 60 catapult kits for use by students in collaborative construction and investigation of force and work. For the purpose of engaging students in lessons and providing historical context of the machines.
