There are many during after school STEM clubs, science investigations, and science inquiry projects students need to make models or prototypes to represent their ideas. Most times, the students use found materials to create such things and it doesn’t do justice to their ideas. We want the students to make their models and prototypes as close to their ideas as possible by use of 3D Printing Pens. With this technology, our students’ abilities to create are endless.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

My STEM students have greatly enjoyed using this new technology to design and create their own ideas.  They were given several challenges to complete.  One challenge was an introductory challenge to using the pens and how to create 3D pieces. They needed to create a cube.  They discovered they needed to make each face of the cube - connecting to mathematics knowledge of nets.  Another challenge was to create a bridge meeting a few stipulations.  Their bridge needed to be at least four centimeters off the "ground," twenty centimeters long, and strong enough and smooth enough for a marble to roll across safely.  The students created diagrams of their bridge and then templates of all the pieces they would need to create their bridge.  Creating the template was truly a challenge because it made them think outside of 2D figures they are used to drawing.  This challenge was cognitively complex and the students looked forward to it each day.  Because of this grant, the STEM students have a new way of thinking and a glimpse into to building and structural design.

Goal

Most times, the students use found materials to create such things and it doesn’t do justice to their ideas. We want the students to make their models and prototypes as close to their ideas as possible by use of 3D Printing Pens. With this technology, our students’ abilities to create are endless. 

 

What will be done with my students

Time and time again, our students could create their ideas using 3D printing pens. These devices allow students to have a hands-on experience with advanced technology, rather than watching something be printed in a standard 3D printer. It is our hope to have many students using these pens throughout different inquiry projects and STEM related endeavors. Currently, our students create their ideas using found materials, paper, glue, tape, etc. Being able to create their own ideas to their exact measurements and specifications will be an amazing thing for our students. Each time students need to solve a real world problem in science or during STEM activities, they will be able to create their model or prototype bringing in a whole new realm of invention. 

 

Benefits to my students

Access to 3D printing pens will benefit all students and teachers in our school. Throughout the grade levels, students are given the opportunity to solve real world problems through scientific invention. Our school hopes to have the ability to allow students to create a model or prototype of whatever their imagination and critical thinking can think up. Year after year, students will get to benefit from these innovating pieces of technology. 

 

Describe the Students

Our school has a wide variety of students. The students in our classrooms represent many different cultures and ethnicities. The students range in academic ability also. There are students who need remediation with academics and students who need enrichment activities. We have students with special needs, such as specific learning disabilities, autism, speech and language disabilities, and students with physical disabilities. Our school is a Title I school and has a large low socio-economic population. All of our students get free breakfast and lunch. Many would never have access to piece of technology like this at home. However, all of our students are able to solve problems and have many great ideas that could come to life with this type of technology. 

 

Budget Narrative

KT-PRASE 3D For Kids, through Amazon is a kit that includes 1 3D printing pen, 1 power adapter, 1 power cord, and 1 5 meter 1.75mm PLA Filament. The pens are available in 4 colors: black, blue, red, and yellow. These pens are suitable for children with adult supervision and direction. There are also many safety features to this pen that others do not have, including a ceramic nozzle instead of copper because it does not get as hot. We will get 18 pens to all for multiple classes to have several groups or partners using the pens at the same time.

PLA filament is non-toxic, odorless, and safer than other types of filament available. We will get 13 packs of extra filament to allow the students to continue creating and not run out of material.
