My overall goal this year is to bridge the achievement gap that exists between impoverished students and their same aged, more affluent, peers. In order to do that, my primary objective is to expose my students to all the possibilities learning has to offer their future success. Due to the fact that our students and their families cannot necessarily afford the same after school activities and opportunities that their same aged peers may have financial access to, my goal is to provide access to as many of those opportunities and activities as I possibly can. One opportunity our students sometimes miss out on is the ability to participate in STEM and explore all it has to offer. With this grant, we would be able to purchase a resource that allows us to explore all the aspects of STEM through a literary lens.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will utilize the resource as a research/investigative tool to guide further inquiry and exploration of various topics. This resource discusses a wide variety of STEM topics including but not limited to: Robots, technological advancements over time and in the future, inventors and inventions, and so much more.

Benefits to my students

The benefit this resource would offer our students is ten-fold. To begin with, it will offer them insights into STEM topics and inquiries they may otherwise rarely, if ever, be exposed to. This resource will allow them the ability to expand their critical thinking and wondering skills as it relates to the world around them in the realm of STEM and it will make the aspects of STEM more familiar to them. There is another ginormous benefit for our population of kiddos, and that is the literary component. Because this resource is an interactive textbook, it will help to bridge the achievement gap that exists between impoverished children and their same aged more affluent peers. With this resource they will find texts that are engaging and interesting to them, which will increase their interest and expose to reading as a whole - while still developing and allowing them to research STEM concepts.

Describe the Students

My students are a wonderful mixed bag. The school in which I teach is a Title 1 school that provides every single student free lunch. The majority of our students and their families severely struggle financially. I have 22 total students. Seven of those are ESOL and six more are ESE. Two of my learners are gifted. Even though we are an amalgamation of abilities and backgrounds, we truly love coming to school and learning and having the opportunity to be the best we can be. These students are grateful for an opportunities that come their way and I'm sure would fully embrace this resource and all the opportunities that come along with it.

Budget Narrative
