Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide ESE High School Science students with the necessary classroom supplies to create Interactive Science Journals.

What will be done with my students

My science students will be provided with classroom materials which will allow them to create Interactive Science Journals which they can use to reinforce concepts taught in High School Science classes. Students will use their Interactive Science Journals daily to organize notes, diagrams, graphic organizers and supplemental science materials. Students will read teacher provided feedback to assist in understanding the complex high school science concepts and state standards.

Benefits to my students

Interactive Journals provide students a resource that they create where information, notes, diagrams, lab graphing and other science material can be kept and organized. Teachers add input, grades and feedback into each student Interactive Journal to help with individual learning. Interactive Journals are reviewed and used as study tools. ESE students feel pride and accomplishment when they are able to view their work compiled into an organized fashion.

Describe the Students

All students are ESE. Students are Emotional-Behavioral Disorders, Other Health Impaired, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and/or School Based Mental Health. Students are high needs with 100% of our population receiving free and/or reduced lunch benefits. Many of my students reside in group homes or are in the foster care system.

Students tend to be low performers in the traditional schools. Low class ratio, behavior management, social skills training infused throughout the day and case management assist the students in showing gains.
