Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 125

At the end of quarters 1 and 3, students take the district cycle exam.  It's over all the content convered that marking period.  I used the data from the Cycle 1 assessment to assign students sections in Study Island to remediate instruction before students took the midterm exam.  On all of the repeat benchmarks, the students who used study island saw an increase in their test scores.  My students are currently taking the Cycle 3 assessment.  I will be doing the same process to increase final exam scores as well.

My students also like using the flashcard and lesson feature of Study Island as a study tool to prepare for our class unit tests.  This statement is based on comments students have said to me.  They find it helpful and like that it's already made for them.  The game option motivates them to want to use the program (very helpful for my lower level students).  I also like that it helps them study for my tests because I see an increase in scores from the pre to the post-test.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for this project is to obtain higher student achievement on the district science assessments through the use of the Study Island program.

What will be done with my students

I have used Study Island in the past as a supplement to what I do in the classroom. The web-based program lets students work at their own pace, reinforcing the science standards. My kids can review the content taught in class and take quizzes with questions similar to what they'd see on the science assessments given by the district and state (i.e. FCAT). Based on formative assessments given in class, I also assign students certain sections where they need remediation. I do this because I want them all to be able to demonstrate mastery. Students I've had in the past also use this as a tool to prepare for my unit tests. They told me it really helps them study, which is why I am applying for this grant!

Benefits to my students

Study Island supports the learning process and builds off my students’ enthusiasm for technology with engaging, interactive lessons and activities. Through the use of this program, students are able to practice and review rigorous and engaging content built from Florida's state standards and Common Core standards. Instruction is differentiated with immediate feedback, built-in remediation, and actionable, real-time progress reports. I love that I can assign certain sections based on individual needs, run data reports, and modify my instruction in class based on scores. The fact that it's web-based and easy to use allows me to reinforce key academic concepts anytime, anywhere.

Describe the Students

My students have a desire to learn. We are a title one school with the majority of our population being African American. I teach all academic levels. My students vary from low to high performers and all deserve the chance to meet their full potential.

Budget Narrative

The money would provide 125 licenses for students to access Study Island with.
