Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 25

The students have had an overwhelming positive response to this reading.  Each vignette has provided students to connect to the world they knew and the world in which they are currently living.  Cultural differences have been examined through the author's ability to tell her story.  I have found that the students really look forward to this class because they are able to see their own lives in the characters of the book.  It is a rare reading that allows my students to do this.  They usually are focusing on what vocabulary words they need to translate.  In reading these small stories, they have forgotten that their English is limited, and have immersed into the mini-plots of the book.  Thank you so much for sponsoring this project.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide opportunity, access, and direction in reading literature.

What will be done with my students

Students will each have a book to bring to class and home. Assignments, discussions, and reading skill lessons will be taught using the literature.

Benefits to my students

When people read, good things happen. I like to encourage my students to understand how one can learn (even from fiction) life lessons as well as improve their reading skills for future endeavors.

Describe the Students

My students are English limited proficient. Some are students as young as 16, who could not finish high school. Others have degrees from their country but would like to go to a technical school or get a degree at the university. All of my students are highly motivated.

Budget Narrative

I will purchase class sets for each book.
