Our goal is to encourage our students by showing them that their education is important.
This will be done by bringing dads to school with a breakfast followed by a school related activity, students reading to their fathers or father figures. Fathers are important to the family and a father's involvement in a child's life can make all the difference in the world. By bringing their children to school, fathers and father figures can demonstrate their commitment to the success of their children in school and in life. Taking your child to school isn't just a gesture, it’s a way to show your child that their education really matters. When a dad or father figure gets involved in a child’s education, that child succeeds, and we are able to build stronger connections and communities.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 230

We are so grateful for the donation you made to our school.  The event was amazing and seeing our students with their fathers and father figures was such an awarding experience.  Seeing the students throughout the day talk about their morning with their dads had such a postive effect on the school atmosphere.  Bridging the gap between our school and our families is such an important goal at Rawlings and you helped us create one of our most successful events.  We thank you again and will forever be grateful.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to encourage our students by showing them that their education is important.

What will be done with my students

Students will bring their dads to school early to share a book and have breakfast together. Opportunities for special moments and conversations with their dads or father figures can lead to strong relationships as research shows a correlation between the impact of a father's involvement in their children's education and their academic success. The the child(ren) and their person can have a photograph taken that will be a special memory artifact/anchor.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit as their dads and father figures will be more connected with school. Moms are usually the front line person. The students we serve have special needs and a large percent of the the time the mothers attend the meetings. We are doing this across the entire school as our students are shared by their classroom teacher and our peer teachers all notice that the mom is the school connection. We feel that getting dads more involved with children's education will benefit our students. We also want to acknowledge the men in these students lives who are like father figures. We work hard to not exclude any student as we are aware a lot of our population does not have their biological dad at home. No one feels left out and everyone is celebrated. Over the past couple of years this has been one of our schools largest events, but our school has had very minimal funds to support this school activity. This year we would like to make this event more memorable so we can continue to encourage our fathers to support their students academics. We want each family to leave with a picture and a book so they can remember this day.

Describe the Students

Our students are K-5th grade ESE students with reading disabilities. They are low performers due to the disabilities and most work very hard to complete tasks. My teaching partner and I have noticed that moms are the ones who attend most of our IEP meetings. Encouraging parent involvement helps build positive relationships between schools and families. Research shows that the impact of the father’s role in a child’s academic development increase academic performance and helps decrease discipline problems.

Budget Narrative

We want to serve a nice hot breakfast dads and students will remember. The books will be a variety of reading levels and genres the children can select and begin reading with dad at the breakfast.
