The goal of this project is to have 100% of my Kindergarten students meet end of year Science standards. The "Let's Find Out/Science Spin" kindergarten magazine introduces Science and Social Studies topics in a predictable nonfiction format that align to our curriculum. Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

Science is an exciting time of our Kindergarten classroom.  My students beg for Science! They love getting their Science Lab coats on to do their "work". Journals are part of our Science time as my students observe and record.   The Science excitement is also evident when we get our weekly magazines!  All these materials were a result of this grant.  I never could have bought these things for my students without this funding.  Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to have 100% of my Kindergarten students meet end of year Science standards. The "Let's Find Out/Science Spin" kindergarten magazine introduces Science and Social Studies topics in a predictable nonfiction format that align to our curriculum. This magazine, along with journaling materials for observing, recording and exploration in the classroom Science Center will support this goal.

What will be done with my students

My students will have the opportunity for engaging hands-on science exploration and observation in the classroom Science Center. They will record their Science observations which may include fossil rocks, insects, seedlings, butterflies to name a few. My students will develop a strong interest in learning all things Science as they dress as a Scientist in their lab coats and safety glasses. The "Let's Find Out/Science Spin" magazine will allow students additional opportunities for literacy. Each student will have their own copy to work on with a parent volunteer during Literacy Centers at school. The student will then bring the magazine home for sharing with families. This project includes independent work opportunities, student collaboration and family involvement all helping to create another level of engagement and enthusiasm for learning in Science, along with Reading and Writing.

Benefits to my students

Students will make progress to meet end of year Science standards. The Science Center will become a central area of learning during Literacy Centers. Students will develop an interest in Science through this project. The following standards will be addressed:

SC.K.N.1.1 Collaborate with a partner to collect information.
SC.K.N.1.2 Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses.
SC.K.N.1.3 Keep pictorial records as appropriate of investigations conducted.
SC.K.N.1.4 Observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features.
SC.K.N.1.5 Recognize that learning comes from careful observation.

Describe the Students

Forest Lakes is home to 508 Pre-K through grade 5 students of which 43% received free and/or reduced lunch in the 2018-2019 school year. Current class data reveals that my self-contained Kindergarten population contains a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. An analysis of my current student data reveals that 5 are Exceptional Education Students (ESE) who qualify for an Individualized Education Plan which provides services for speech-impairment, 1 ESE student with Occupational Therapy, 4 are ELL ( English Language Learners) students and 1 student is currently being screened for gifted services.

Budget Narrative

Science materials are currently accessed and housed in the classroom Science Center. All materials requested here are consumables that need to be replenished for my new group of Kindergarten Kids for the 2018-19 school year! The journals and reading materials will help to infuse literacy with Science. Lamination will be used for magazine posters in Science Center. My Kindergarten kids love dressing as Scientists and love Science!! My classroom budget cannot afford to supply the subscriptions and journaling materials needed for this project.
