Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 350

Our school has used and will continue to use the Oral Storytelling tent for years to come. The video camera will be utilized weekly by students, for students.

Our students have left this year with many stories in their heads and on paper.

We will continue to use this from K-5.

Thank you so much.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Improve Oral Language skills and writing skills. Improving the ability to have students talk respectfully to one another and create an understanding atmosphere.

What will be done with my students

In an effort to improve their communication skills we would like to have a "storytelling" area in the library.
The students will come the first month of school with their class and teacher(s) to learn the art of storytelling. As the year progresses, the students will have an opportunity to perform their stories. We will record their stories to share with the school and their families.
This will build confidence, speaking skills, and build a community of story tellers and improve vocabulary.
This will have a great impact on their writing skills as well as their oral storytelling skills.

Benefits to my students

Research states that:
Children of poverty hear about 250,000 words per year. Which is 3,750,000 fewer words than those from middle/upper class.
Verbal interactions in low income families:
Primarily parent talking at child
Language was low complexity
Very limited use of questioning/explaining/seeking child input.

Describe the Students

Students at Sandy Lane Elementary are at 100% free lunch and dinner.
Students need to have the opportunity to communicate with each other appropriately. By offering this guided experience we will give students the opportunity to speak to each other with respect.

Budget Narrative

We would like to create a "campfire" experience that is intimate but also can be visible to promote student safety.
The cushions are on the floor for aesthetics and giving each student their own space. Rain stick is for talking and video is for recording student/adult stories.
