Goal

My goal is to improve oral language, critical thinking, and problem solving skills in my class of PreK students.

What will be done with my students

Hands-on activities that allow the students to cooperatively learn, solve problems, and share their knowledge with their peers. Our goal is to get them talking, working out problems, and thinking out loud. Out activities will include, but not be limited to engineering and stem problem solving to learn about math and science. Building tracks for wheels to travel on and pathways for balls to roll and find out what happens when we change paths. We will teach a Nursery Rhyme unit where we will build a wall out of large legos as a class, students will fill bags with different materials (feathers, blocks, marbles, cotton balls, etc...) then throw them off the wall to see what happens and record their findings on a chart. We take pictures of all of this and talk about what happened and why we think it happened. We will also have many other science, art, math, and language arts units that "come to life," like watching lima beans sprout, then planting them in our garden to watch them grow.

Benefits to my students

The children will learn to use their words to express themselves, cooperatively problem solve, use math, language, and science to discover the world that they live in. What we do in out classroom is provide the students with that background knowledge and prerequisite skills to be successful in a kindergarten through fifth grade classroom.

Describe the Students

My students are mixed, they include students that score developmentally from nine months to four years of age, although they are actually all a minimum of three years of age when they begin school. Many live at or below the poverty level, and some are homeless. Many are developmentally delayed, speech delayed, language delayed, drug exposed at birth, or have suffered unimaginable emotional trauma in their young lives.
