Goal

Northwest Elementary - The mission of the after-school STEM Academies run by the PCS K-12 STEM Department is to offer students opportunities to conduct hands-on STEM investigations, explore careers in STEM, improve team building and leadership skills, learn about business planning and interact with community partners.

What will be done with my students

STEM Academy students will work in teams to utilize Dash and Dot robots that are packed full of capabilities that allow them to interact with their environment and each other, using their multiple built-in motors, sensors, LEDs and audio capabilities. Teams will experience coding, using Make Wonder apps that require teams to tackle a series of challenges and in-app puzzles that introduce the fundamental concepts of coding. The app incorporates machine programming and an original visual design to advance young students’ understanding of computer science. Teams will be required to complete obstacles, problem-solve and enhance their communication skills by sharing their team’s results with other classmates.

Benefits to my students

The creation of the PCS STEM Academies provides a solution to addressing STEM content through the use of an extended school day. Students participating in the PCS STEM Academies become immersed in STEM based activities once a week for sixty minutes for a duration of 26 weeks. These 3rd grade students can continue on with STEM learning as the K-12 STEM Department offers after-school STEM Academies for students in 2nd-12th grades.

The Pinellas County Schools Assessment, Accountability and Research Department conducted an analysis on the impact of STEM Academy participation on NGSSS Science EOC Performance and the Math FSA within the Pinellas County School District.
• The odds of a student who is enrolled in a STEM ELP course passing the NGSSS Science EOC is 3.68 times greater than that of a student who is not enrolled in a STEM ELP course.
• The odds of a student who is enrolled in a STEM ELP course passing the FSA Math is 2.13 times greater than that of a student who is not enrolled in a STEM ELP course.
