The budding scientists of Melrose Elementary School’s kindergarten classes are seeking a grant to enhance their knowledge of nature, animal lifecycles and to explore a range of animal habitats. They are currently learning and writing ‘All About…’ informative texts about animals in their science and reading lessons. The objective is that through these real-life experiences, our scholars will be inspired to draw on real-life experiences to supplement the digital and print-based knowledge they have acquired at school. These invaluable hands-on experiences will increase their scientific knowledge, and support their burgeoning reading and writing skills. Funding in the amount of $1,840.00 is requested to cover transport and the fees associated with traveling to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

What will be done with my students

Scholars will participate in guided activities that are aligned to Common Core educational standards. They will tour the zoo, participating in presentations and observing animal characteristics in their environments.

Benefits to my students

Scholars will experience a wide range of animals in their habitats. Many will never have visited a zoo and seen animals in real-life before. They will be able to enhance their knowledge through the application of academic content to real-life scenarios.

Describe the Students

Melrose Elementary School has 442 scholars, of which 100 percent are economically disadvantaged. With a population of disenfranchised students, the need for after-school and extracurricular activities are paramount. Students who are not afforded opportunities for enriching supplementary activities are at-risk of having underdeveloped background knowledge, communication and organizational skills. Melrose Elementary is eligible for Title 1 funds and these students typically do not have an opportunity to visit zoos or attend such activities beyond the school environment.
