Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

Two classes of gifted students in my advanced academics elective benefitted from the resources this grant provided.

Orbiting with Logic - I used this book for warm ups during the first semester of the year. I also used some puzzles for my advanced and traditional science classes.

Team Challenges provided teamwork activities, so far we have completed many of the activities in the Improv section. Students are improving in their ability to work together and play off each other. We tried Animal Antics where students had 10 toothpicks and 2 pebbles with which to communicate their favorite animal to the rest of theh group. Later we worked on scenarios including - One member of your group is at the dentist having a tooth pulled. The dentist forgot to use Novocain. I look forward to moving into other chapters of the book to develop creativity, cooperation, communication, and discussion.

100+ Games That Make Kids Think has given me word, math, logic, and memory games to teach my students. This has been especially wonderful during testing when students can be stuck in one class for long periods. Students have enjoyed trying to figure out the key to some of the games, all of which are quick to set up. They often only require toothpicks or paper and pen, but require significant thought.

The Giver - I read this aloud to the class as we worked through a unit on utopia. As part of the unit students created their own utopia and put together a report on The Giver using the options in the book Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Language Arts. Instead of their only option being a book report they were able to choose from a menu of options with various values. Their choices needed to add up to 100 points to make a complete project.

Cultural Anthropology - During this unit (Quarter 3) students chose an ancient culture to research. Students used resource books (Social & Cultural Anthropology, Ten Discoveries That Rewrote History, Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches, Rubbish! The Archaeology of Garbage, and The World Encyclopedia of Archaeology) to decide on and research their chosen culture.

Independent Study - Gifted students complete an independent study project during their 4th quarter. I am preparing materials to help them organize and plan their project using the Independent Study book. This gifted students the option to follow their interests while structuring the project in a way that teaches students how to plan for and execute a large research project.

Creative Whack Pack - The cards in the Creative Whack Pack each have a strategy to jump start creativity. I've been using them as bellwork or quick discussions between activities. Sometimes the ideas spark a discussion, other times they are just an idea to be used when a creativity struggle arises.

Original Grant Overview

The goal of this grant is to engage gifted students with increased student choice, interesting materials, and critical and creative thinking puzzles.

What will be done with my students

Gifted students require great amounts of differentiation and choice in their assignments. These resources will allow me to differentiate, organize, and allow for great ammounts of choice in how students learn. With these resources I can organize my classroom so students have maximum autonomy over their learning. The students will also have appropriately leveled resources for their Anthropology unit and culturally appropriate novel options.

Benefits to my students

Students will have autonomy in chosing a topic of interest, and reliable, trustworthy, high level resources to complete their projects in the gifted elective course. This autonomy encourages gifted learners to find personal value and connection to the required academics. The gifted elective course will be able to support their need for resources that go deeper than the average middle school resources are able to with these books. Some of them are resources for students and some are teacher resources that allow me to create a student-centered environment for them to develop each of their projects.

Describe the Students

I have two classes of gifted students. They are high performers and meet the requirements of the state and county to receive gifted services. They are in advanced and accelerated courses as well as the gifted elective course. Their reading levels are mostly beyond 12th grade, so they require high level materials that are not otherwise available.
