Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 33

Thank you so much for funding this project.  We have been fortunate enough to purchase yoga ball chairs and wobble stools with previous grants.  It has been a big hit with our students.  The down side was that we did not have enough for every child to have a "special seat".  Not only will this grant allow everyone in the class to have a choice, it introduces a new type of flexible seating, scoop rockers.  The scoop rockers were something we wanted to try but had given up hope of it being funded.  Students will now be able to work on their writing or reading while in a comfortable, reclining or rocking position.  I can't wait to see the positive results this will bring to the class.  I will post pictures as soon as we can get the items ordered and in our classroom.

Everything is unpacked and in use.  The students were so excited as the boxes started to come in.  It seemed like every day there was a new surprise.  We now have a seat for every child and wobble stools for every child in  reading group.  They especially love the scoop rockers.  It allows them a chance to get comfortable with a book and rock as they read.  They are using them in writing too and I actually see a difference in the quality of writing they produce.

Thank you again for making this a reality for our wonderful and active kindergarten students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We would like to channel some of the extra energy that 5 and 6 year old children have. Through the use of white boards, balance balls, Hokki stools and scooped seating, our students will be able to get their wiggles out which will increase their ability to focus and stay actively engaged.

What will be done with my students

Students will be actively engaged through the use of white boards and flexible seating options. Students will be able to choose what type of seating they would like. It could be balance balls with or without back support to sit on. This will strengthen their core. It could be scoop chairs so they are closer to the ground but in a reclining position. For Guided Reading groups they would have the option of Hokki stools or regular seats.

Benefits to my students

There are some students that are in constant motion. The use of alternative seating will help them put some of that energy to use which in turn will help them stay focused for a longer period of time. Students are held accountable for staying on task through the use of white boards. When posed with a problem or question, all students will be able to respond on their white board rather than just a few that are called on.

Describe the Students

Our class is made up of 33 five and six year olds. More than half of my class qualifies for free lunch. For more than half of my class, English is not their first language. Three students receive special education support. One of those students receives extra services for academics, motor skills and language therapy.

Budget Narrative

We would like to provide our kindergarten students with a wide variety of seating options. As early as kindergarten, they are expected to stay seated and focused for long periods of time. Whether they are working independently, in cooperative groups or in guided reading/writing or math groups, we want them to select the seat that will help them stay focused as they wiggle their way through a lesson. There are many options for alternative seating. We want them to be accountable for their learning. The use of white boards is one way to do this. We can quickly scan the class to see who may need extra help, who understands and who may need to be challenged a little more. Although this may seem expensive, it is minimal when compared to the gains they will make when that extra energy is used in a productive manner.
