Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 10

This grant has helped my students to create and apply coding to the robots which they built. They not only were able to gain a greater understanding of how code works but also identify complex algorithms and abstractions. These skills were needed for my students to complete their CREATE task of the AP Computer Science Principles Portfolio. Overall, the use of these robots and their code enhanced my students overall knowledge of coding. It not only helped them to be more successful on their AP exams but also with the ever changing technological world. These robots will be used in the future for similar lessons for my APCSP courses but will also help draw interest in recruiting purposes for the course.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Help make real world connections and empower my AP Computer Science Principles students to confidentially learn how to create code that will result in real time, real world robotic performance. This will allow them to make better connections with technology and coding in everyday life. This will better enhance their knowledge of code creation, script writing, abstraction, etc. Mastery of these concepts is necessary for students to gain full understanding of the "Big Idea" of the APCSP Course. What will be done with my students

Students will build and code robots. They will create many different instructional scripts that will include integration of algorithms, mathematical/logical concepts, selection, iteration and abstractions. They will use this lesson/exercise to practice the creation of their own program and being able to identify the codes crucial components along with its purpose. They will also be required to write up a mock "Create Task" reflection identifying any difficulties they encountered and how they solved/fixed their problems (also including all required components of the APCSP Create Task).  

 

Benefits to my students

Better understanding of the elements of coding and how to create their own code. Students will also be able to practice creating a APCSP "Create Task" response to not only practice reflective writing skills but to better identify the required components of the APCSP "Create Task" that will be submitted to college board in their final portfolio.
