Goal

To increase my students problem solving skills through hands-on activities with real world applications. Through planning, collaboration, and critical thinking, my students can apply the engineering process in a fun and engaging way. 

 

What will be done with my students

The use of these materials would be permanently integrated into the curriculum on a yearly basis. They will use kits such as K'Nex and Snap Circuits series to learn about force and motion and alternative energy. This ties in with our gifted curriculum goals such as thinking creatively and critically to identify and solve real-world problems. Once they have created their projects, they will look for ways to modify and/or improve upon it while also relating it to real world issues.  

 

Benefits to my students

While my students are high performers, many of them lack the critical thinking skills needed to be successful. By utilizing these materials I expect to see my students finding out how fascinating and fun math, science, and engineering is. I also expect them to see the connections between the different fields of studies and hopefully take a learning goal and turn it into a possible career. Creating these different projects will also give my female students an edge in math and science as they continue on through middle and high school, opening up more opportunities for them. 

 

Describe the Students

I have 23 students in grades 1-5. They show a need for an advanced and rigorous curriculum which is why they were identified and placed in gifted. They come from a very low socio-economic neighborhood and most do not have access to these types of materials or kits.  

 

Budget Narrative

These kits will be used for STEM learning with all students. The batteries are for replacement as needed.
