Goal

Use the Social Thinking curriculum to give additional support and systematic programming to all students at our school (3 thru 5th grade) who show a need for behaviorial/social intervention based on their individual classroom behavior data, ability to self-regulate during unstructured activities (ex. lunch or PE), ability to work independently during small group classroom work activities/projects and/or office referral data.

What will be done with my students

The guidance councelor and self-contained ASD (autism spectrum disorder) 3-5 teacher will use the Social Thinking curriculum with students in the self-contained 3-5 ASD classroom. In addition, the guidance councelor and/or behavior specialist will use The Social Thinking curriculum with targeted students as needed during individual or small group Social Thinking instruction during the student/s grade level intervention time period.

Benefits to my students

By participating in the Social Thinking curriculum, the targeted students will improve their social/behaviorial functioning. The students participating in the Social Thinking intervention groups will:
Learn to recognize that they and others have different perceptions and abilities to process social information
Learn to navigate their social thinking, social interaction and social communication in order to decrease problem behaviors and increase their ability to become effective members during classroom small group work activities/projects
Learn to better adapt and respond to the people and situations around them

In addition to strengthening social/behavioral functioning, the Social Thinking curriculum will strengthen the students' academic skills since the social mind is critical for making sense of so much of the information taught through our Common Core and state standards. Many of the standards encourage students to consider another person's point of view, infer or predict actions, or summarize plots, all of which are rooted in processing that occurs in the social mind.

Describe the Students

The targeted students show a need for tier 2 or tier 3 support due to social/behavioral deficits. Some of these students have been diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder), sensory disorders, anxiety disorders or Asperger's. Some are language impaired. Many have no diagnosis. 10 students are serviced in our self-contained 3-5 ASD (autism spectrum disorder) unit.

Budget Narrative

All budget materials will be purchased from SocialThinking.com and will supplement the social thinking materials we received last year. Our RTI (response to intervention) team chose the Social Thinking curriculum/materials for our Tier 2 and Tier 3 social/behavioral intervention groups because of its ability to meet the various needs and developmental levels of the students at our school. Using one curriculum source for our social/behavioral interventions will give our students and staff a common language and will give our school the ability to build capacity among our staff since the curriculum can be implemented year after year with no additional cost to our school.
