Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 575

This grant has enabled us to provide a "Book of the Grading Period" for every classroom as well as "high traffic areas" such as the Front Office, Cafeteria, Media Center... This has positively impacted the school since the books have a positive message that correlates with our Commitment to Character. Additionally, it has created common vocabulary so the students can discuss the books throughout the school. The students are so excited when they see "their" book in other areas of the school. This sends the message that reading is important and can be done anywhere!

Thank you again for your generosity. As always we appreciate your support of 74th Street Elementary!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to create an universal "Book of the Grading Period" program to enable all students to be exposed to the same book throughout the school to increase vocabulary, stress the importance of reading in all areas of the school, and create an even stronger sense of school community.

What will be done with my students

Each grading period, right after report cards are distributed, all classrooms will receive the same "Book of the Grading Period" with a lesson plan to use with their students. To show that "reading is everywhere", the "Book of the Grading Period" will also be on display in the cafeteria, front office, PE...

Benefits to my students

The benefits are many! :) Classroom instruction will be delivered in an engaging way to students. Students will see that reading books is not just isolated to the classroom. Students will have a "common vocabulary" surrounding the theme of the book, and having the book displayed in all areas of the school will enhance our sense of school community and pride.

Describe the Students

All of the students at 74th Street Elementary receive free breakfast and lunch. We also provide dinner and weekend food for identified families. Our needs are great but our spirits are strong!!! :) Parents truly love their children and want to help them succeed. This is a neighborhood school with many grandparents and parents being alumni. We are currently rated a "C' but are well on our way to achieving an "A" grade!

Budget Narrative

The Leadership Team will select 4 books for the year and buy 40 copies to be used in classrooms and throughout the school. Lesson plans will be designed by the Reading Coach and included with the books before they are distributed.
