Goal

To increase student understanding and appreciation of STEM-based activities through fun learning experiences with purposeful connection to Florida State Math and Science Standards.

What will be done with my students

Students participating in after school STEM clubs in grades 1-4 will use the requested resources to apply concepts, develop problem solving skills, harness creativity and foster innovation while participating in collaborative based activities.

Benefits to my students

These STEM activities foster a myriad of student skills that are required for the 21st century work force. Students, working in collaborative structures, will learn to design and create structures using the kits. The accompanying lesson plans provide teachers with engaging lessons that promote student innovation and creativity. These fun activities also help to cultivate a love for STEM-based subjects for students.

Describe the Students

Students in the clubs come from diverse backgrounds. Ridgecrest has a school-within-a-school model with a full-time magnet gifted program and K-5 general education program. 90% of students in the general education program come from high poverty backgrounds. The clubs serve as a bridge between the magnet and non-magnet programs at Ridgecrest by allowing students to collaborate between the two programs. We purposefully encourage students from at-risk backgrounds to participate to help create a spark for learning.

Budget Narrative

Approximately $700 will be spend to purchase We Do Kits which provide students with structured STEM-based activities. Approximately $800 will be used to purchase additional lego kits and associated items to be used by clubs allowing for hands-on collaborative problem solving and design.
