Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 25

As new students enrolled in the GED/ABE classroom here at the Salvation Army Rehab Center, they were given an organizer to set them on the road to success.

The notebooks are designed to be an "all in one" package, giving students a place to store and keep notes, assignments and supplies.  They are split into the 4 sections for the GED test and each student received paper/pencils, post it notes, highlighters and a pencil pouch, so they could have the items accesible at all times.  Financially it was designed to lessen the burden on my current students, and provide them the basic necessities to succeed in the classroom.

In the future I hope to give these binders to students at the beginning of a semester. This will allow students who enroll to have access to the material from the get go.  I wrote the grant a little later this year, so it limited who received the binders.  Some of the students had already purchased the items and did not want to change their current systems. Another challenge I have within my classroom is the coming and going of students through out the year. With the GED/ABE program we have students enroll and drop within one school year a number of times.  Keeping the students enrolled and engaged is often a challenge and I hope that the binder will help manage the disruptions that many of the students face.

Thank you again for your assistance in purchasing the items and keeping our students on track for success!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide a 1 inch 3 ring binder, dividers, paper, pencils and other school supplies to enrolled students in the Salvation Army GED/ABE class.

What will be done with my students

I would like to provide each enrolled student with a "Learning Kit" that will help them stay organized and motivated as we work through their GED/ABE classwork. These "All in One" notebook will give students a chance to practice good study habits and stay on top of their current assignments.

Benefits to my students

With the right school supplies and frame of mind, our students will learn that staying organized is critical when moving forward from one subject to the next. A lot of our students do not have stable home situations or steady incomes, so I hope to lessen the burden by providing them each an "All in One Learning Kit". The notebook will allow my students to have all their school supplies in one location, which can travel to and from school as needed. The kit will have dividers and paper so students can keep track of current assignments and continue to take notes and keep study tools on hand (Their multiplication table or GED formula sheet).

Describe the Students

The students in the Salvation Army GED/ABE class have a wide variety of learning needs and wants. Many of our students are looking for that second chance to go back to school and earn a diploma. Each student has their own story to tell and reasons for being here. Typically our student population is made up of students between the ages of 16-40. Some students would like to improve their current job situations and others are looking to re-enter the work force and need their diplomas to do so.
