The students will create a community portrait that demonstrates the value of giving back to the community. The ultimate goal is to achieve an understanding that we are all "Portrait Artist" and the work we do with on the portraits around us is the greatest contribution we can offer our own portrait.

Goal

The students will create a community portrait that demonstrates the value of giving back to the community. The ultimate goal is to achieve an understanding that we are all "Portrait Artist" and the work we do with on the portraits around us is the greatest contribution we can offer our own portrait.

What will be done with my students

The students will conceive, create and experience the concepts of community creation. They will design several poses of community engaging in the act helping and working with each other.
Using Plaster casting material, the students will create molds of each others' arms, legs and face. No student will model for more than one piece of this giant sculpture, but every student will have the opportunity to create an element of the sculpture from a wrist watch to a hairdo, The pieces will all be assembled and mounted in a prominent spot in our school, or in our community.
This project is not about creating a special piece of art (This is inevitable): this project is about offering our students the opportunity to experience the feeling of working together in the spirit of Creation.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to the students involved in this project in life changing. First it will provide the mirror that they can create something with life time implications. If we don't create a world of children that see's themselves as creative, How will we ever create a better world? Second, in a world of education that solicits individual achievements we have drifted from the experiences of teaching young people how to work together. A project like this allows them to see the value of their contributions to community. Additionally, It is the spirit of community that creates the greatest portrait of community.

Describe the Students

I have a wide range of student in my classes. I have senior honor students in classes with low achievers. I have ESE students sitting next to Medical magnet students. Our school population crosses all cultures and all demographic populations.

In a project like this, done in a monochromatic color scheme, every student that comes to experience this project is perfect for this project.
