Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 116

There was a huge increase in post test scores for the human body unit (pre- average score F, post- average score B). Students told me they liked painting the guts t-shirts because it incorporated art, creativity, and allowed them to see how our organs are laid out in the body. This gave them a better understanding of how the systems worked together because of the visual and the group discussions they had using the shirt.  They also made connections while dissecting a sheep's heart and lungs at MOSI.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I want to increase student engagement and achievement through inquiry driven instruction using the materials from my request.

What will be done with my students

Because of past experience, I am requesting a guts t-shirt for each of my students to paint as an engagement activity at the start of our human body unit. My students will use these shirts to make discoveries about our body's systems instead of just reading about it in a book. Students decide how they want to paint it as they discuss the organs, their functions and the systems with their peers as they paint. I will also be able to discover what they already know about the body as they design their shirts. This will help me better differentiate instruction for future lessons.

Benefits to my students

The shirts allow students, in a hands on way, to experience the inside of our body at the appropriate scale. We are also incorporating art with science. What kid doesn't like to paint and be creative? The best part about these materials is that students can wear their individualized creation around school and discuss with their peers what they're wearing and why they're wearing it. We will be able to refer back to the shirt throughout our units and use it in various labs, which means students will be able to make connections to what we're learning.

Describe the Students

My students have a desire to learn. We are a title one school with the majority of our population being African American. I teach all academic levels. My students vary from low to high performers and all deserve the chance to meet their full potential.

Budget Narrative

The $696 covers the cost of 116 guts t-shirts with Bay Point Middle School written on the back. Having our school's name included allows the students to wear the shirts at our school while still following dress code.
