Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 220

Students showed an increase on their test scores from the Cycle 1 assessment to the midterm in 6th grade advanced and accelerated science and 8th grade regular and advanced science.  Based on data from semester one, I predict scores will also increase from the cycle 3 assessment to final.  I will update after finals occur towards the end of May.  Students have told me Study Island helps them review the benchmarks they had previously scored low in, gaining a better understanding of the content.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for this project is to obtain higher student achievement on the district science assessments through the use of the Study Island program.

What will be done with my students

I have used Study Island in the past as a supplement to what I do in the classroom. The web-based program lets students work at their own pace, reinforcing the science standards. My kids can review the content taught in class and take quizzes with questions similar to what they'd see on the science assessments given by the district and state (i.e. FCAT). Based on formative assessments given in class, I also assign students certain sections where they need remediation. I do this because I want them all to be able to demonstrate mastery. Students I've had in the past also use this as a tool to prepare for my unit tests. They told me it really helps them study, which is why I am applying for this grant!

Benefits to my students

Study Island supports the learning process and builds off my students’ enthusiasm for technology with engaging, interactive lessons and activities. Through the use of this program, students are able to practice and review rigorous and engaging content built from Florida's state standards and Common Core standards. Instruction is differentiated with immediate feedback, built-in remediation, and actionable, real-time progress reports. I love that I can assign certain sections based on individual needs, run data reports, and modify my instruction in class based on scores. The fact that it's web-based and easy to use allows me to reinforce key academic concepts anytime, anywhere.

Describe the Students

My students have a desire to learn. We are a title one school with the majority of our population being African American. I teach all academic levels. My students vary from low to high performers and all deserve the chance to meet their full potential.

Budget Narrative

Here is the copy of the email I received from the company -

"Hello Dianna,
My name is Carmella DiMatteo and I am your Edmentum Study Island contact for Pinellas County and Bay Point. Last year you made 2 different purchases of Study Island Science - the 6th and 7th grade expires on 10/24/17 and the 8th grade expires on 3/20/18.

My suggestion would be to combine both of last year’s purchases into one purchase with a common expiration date.

The annual cost for 220 science licenses is $1,150.00 Last year you spent $1,177.00 We could do a September 1st to August 31st term and credit back what is left here for a total due this September of $700 would give you Study island Science through August 31, 2018."

So, the total cost, if paid by September, for the 220 student licenses for all grade levels would be $700.
