Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

Since receiving these materials, I have noticed a positive impact in my classroom.  The use of specialized seating allows for students to choose the seat that he/she needs in order to be successful in the classroom.  Bouncy seats, the bungee seat, and the lounges have all contributed to a calmer, more inviting classroom enivornment.  This, in turn, has led do a decrease in behaviors caused by sensory or behavior disorders.  The chairs allow for the students to move while staying seated and participating in classroom instruction.  The increase of instructional time has shown a positive impact on the students' academic success as well!  Overall, the access to specialized seating in my classroom has impacted multiple areas in a positive way.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goals are to satisfy students' need for frequent movement and sensory input, reduce unwanted behaviors and distractions in the classroom, and increase student learning gains.

What will be done with my students

Students will be provided the option of specialized seating (wobble chair, balance balls) and support items (exercise straps, seat cushions) throughout the school day. These items will be used particularly during activities that require the student to stay seated; examples include teacher directed lessons, independent work times, and small group instruction.

Benefits to my students

The ultimate goal for all students using specialized seating will be increased learning gains. Providing appropriate ways for students to move frequently (such as bouncing or wiggling) while seated will positively impact the students in multiple ways. Students are able to meet their needs while remaining focused and attentive during instruction, increase participation during lessons and tasks and reduce distracting behaviors. Reducing these unwanted behaviors will, in turn, reduce both class time spent on addressing behavior and student consequences out of the classroom. Students who may normally disrupt the class by walking around, pacing, standing, and other types of large muscle movements, will be able to sit while still attaining this sensory input. These items will benefit not just the student provided with specialized seating, but also their peers, who are often distracted by these movements. All of these effects will lead to an class-wide increase in student comprehension of information and will ultimately increase learning gains.

Describe the Students

My students attend a Center School for Students with Emotional and/or Behavior Disorders, located in the highest poverty area. Students are placed in our school in order to receive increased staff supports, lower student:teacher ratios and to learn strategies related to behavior modification while attending required academic classes. My class is even more specialized, as each of my students also have Sensory Behaviors, such as those on the Autism Spectrum as well as intellectual impairments. Many have been identified as having other disabilities, such as mental illness, OCD, etc. My students all struggle, academically, and require specialized instruction as well as social skill instruction throughout the day. Many of our students live in group homes or foster care and cannot attain access to the specialized needs they require in regards to their disabilities.

Budget Narrative

Balance Balls and Wobble Chairs will be used for alternate seating as opposed to typical chairs.
The deskerciser will allow students to work gross muscles in legs and the wiggle seat will allow students to move and wiggle while staying seated.
