The goal of this project is to replenish consumable materials for this (previously funded) grant project which supports hands-on observation, exploration and recording in a variety of science topics. Specifically, I would like to provide my Kindergarten students with additional exposure to print in order to meet English/Language Arts and Science standards by the end of this school year. The Let's Find Out kindergarten magazine introduces Science and Social Studies topics with predictable nonfiction texts that align to our curriculum. My students will use the journaling materials for hands-on observation, recording and exploration a in the classroom Science Center and during whole group Science instruction.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

My students became real scientists each time they got to put on their lab coats for science investigation...they loved being scientists!  They asked to do science!   Five year old kindergarten kids learn best through hands on experiences.  The funding from this grant helped to make this happen in my classroom.  They enjoyed wearing thier safety goggles as they made observations in their Science journals...Each student met expectations in our kindergarten Science expectations.  One of the best things this grant helped to make happen was to foster an interest and excitement in all things Science.  Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to replenish consumable materials for this (previously funded) grant project which supports hands-on observation, exploration and recording in a variety of science topics. Specifically, I would like to provide my Kindergarten students with additional exposure to print in order to meet English/Language Arts and Science standards by the end of this school year. The Let's Find Out kindergarten magazine introduces Science and Social Studies topics with predictable nonfiction texts that align to our curriculum. My students will use the journaling materials for hands-on observation, recording and exploration a in the classroom Science Center and during whole group Science instruction.

What will be done with my students

My students will have the opportunity for hands on science exploration and observation in the classroom Science Center at least once a week. The project will infuse Science during our literacy center time. Last year a parent volunteer supervised this center, which I hope to do again this year. The Let's Find Out/Science Spin subscriptions allow students additional opportunities for literacy. These are Kindergarten friendly publications which follow the curriculum and will be shared at home with families to increase family involvement. The materials from this project will provide journals in which my students will record and reflect their Science observations which may include fossil rocks, insects, seedlings, butterflies to name a few. Kindergarten students enjoy dressing as Scientists in lab coats and goggles. My students will develop a strong interest in learning all things Science through this project which includes independent work opportunities, student collaboration and family involvement. This project will help to create another level of excitement and enthusiasm for learning in Science, Reading and Writing.

Benefits to my students

Students will make progress to meet end of year Science standards. The Science Center will become a central area of learning during Literacy Centers. Students will develop an interest in Science through this project. The following standards will be addressed:

SC.K.N.1.1 Collaborate with a partner to collect information.
SC.K.N.1.2 Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses.
SC.K.N.1.3 Keep pictorial records as appropriate of investigations conducted.
SC.K.N.1.4 Observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features.
SC.K.N.1.5 Recognize that learning comes from careful observation.

Describe the Students

Forest Lakes is home to 535 Pre-K through grade 5 students of which 38% received free and/or reduced lunch in the 2016-2017 school year. The specific demographics of my class are not available at this time since our 2017-2018 student rosters have not yet been created. Previous class data reveals that my self-contained Kindergarten population contained a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. My students may be part of an ESE population whose Individualized Education Plan provides services for speech-impaired students, language-impaired students, Autistic Spectrum Disorder students and vision impaired students. Generally most kindergarten students enter the school year with some preschool experience.

Budget Narrative

Science materials are currently accessed and housed in my classroom Science Center. This project calls for consumable journal and reading materials which will help to infuse literacy with Science. Lamination will be used for magazine posters in Science Center. We are thankful that this grant was funded last year. The project was a huge success in my classroom. My Kindergarten kids love dressing as Scientists and loved Science!! All materials requested here are consumables that need to be replenished for my new group of Kindergarten Kids for the 2017-2018 school year! The funding from this grant is needed since our classroom budgets cannot afford to supply the subscriptions and journaling materials for my students.
