Goal

Students will publish original pieces of writing in a professionally bound hard cover book.

What will be done with my students

Students will write fiction or non-fiction three page stories about animals. During the writing process, students will learn about illustrations, editing, and story telling techniques. They will brainstorm ideas with partners, small groups, and teachers. Once their writing is complete, they will submit it to the publishing company, Rescue Writing. Each student will receive a copy of the classroom anthology.

Benefits to my students

Throughout the year, students will participate in Writer's Workshop. They will gain skills to become fabulous authors, illustrators, editors, and publishers. This project will bring the writing process to life.

Describe the Students

I teach Kindergarten at Eisenhower Elementary School. There are many barriers present that impede in the learning process. Not only are their families economically disadvantaged, more that 50% of the students are in a single parent homes. Statistics show that only 40% of the incoming Kindergarten students will graduate from 5th grade at Eisenhower Elementary. There is a very transient population making it difficult for these students to build community and connections with teachers and fellow students.

In addition, Eisenhower has a very high ESOL student population. In Kindergarten, this poses additional struggles for students as they are often afraid to speak because they are embarrassed or do not want to say something that is wrong.

From my experience, it is amazing to know that no matter what barriers my Kindergarten students might be dealing with, they are great kids who really want to learn. They display effort and heart in the learning process. This allows me to teach and help them develop into great students and amazing little people.
