Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

Through the funding of this grant, Forest Lakes Elementary School was able to offer two 8 week sessions of Kindergartten Code Club.  THe first 8 weeks focused on learning how the Bee Bot worked as well as simple coding.  The second 8 weeks allowed students the opportuity to develop their own coding roads/mats, complete multiple step codes as well as take on different roles in their coding group.

This grant allowed for the purchase of additional Bee Bots as well as the materials to make coding mats.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Kindergarten students will be introduced to learning through coding activities that encompass language arts, math, science and social skills standards and learning goals.

What will be done with my students

I plan to have students work in small to program their Bee Bot to carry out a task. In order to accomplish this, students will need to collaborate and communicate with their partners, think critically and problem solve, and be creative in their programming. Groups will be assigned a task and then jobs given to each student: Input Engineer, Debugger, Recorder and Programmer.
Tasks could include but are not limited to:
Identifying Colors
Identifying Shapes
Identifying Letters
Identifying Numerals
Spelling Sight Words
Spelling CVC Words
Subitizing Numbers
Retelling Stories
Identifying Science Topics and Information

As the students become proficient at programming their Bee-Bot, more challenging tasks will be given.

Benefits to my students

Coding is not just for College, it needs to start in Kindergarten. These resources will provide my students with opportunities to foster their curiosity, creativity, and innovation. An added benefit is that my kindergarten students will be completely engaged while using these materials and that will lead to an even deeper understanding of the academic standards at the same time develop a baseline knowledge of coding and how coding works. This is a skill that will be needed in order to compete in the workforce for these students 13 years from now.

Describe the Students

Our 2017-2018 student rosters have not been created at this point. Based on previous class data, our self-contained K population contain a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. Based on past enrollment, my classroom may contain an ESE population of students that include speech, language and/or vision impaired students along with a population of ESOL students.
63% of the student population identify as white, 21% of the population identify as Hispanic. The remaining 16 % identify as Asian, Black or other.

On average, 43% of our student body qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Given those statistics, my diverse classroom is full of students who are willing to learn, who actively engaged in the curriculum and come to school every day ready to have fun and chase their dreams.

Budget Narrative

$630.00 will cover five Bee Bot units as well as a collective hive docking station for charging. In addition, I will purchase pre-designed mats for students to begin coding with as I develop further programming and mats.
