The social determinant of health that our school critically needs, is education. Positive experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, can lead to our students wanting a more healthy lifestyle. Here at Maximo Elementary school, we aim to not only provide useful skills in numeracy and literacy, but to help cultivate civilized young men and women who appreciate the arts and culture. If we were graciously awarded this grant, we would love to have our students have the capability for more educational experiences outside the school setting. Culturally enriching field trips are central to our educational mission. Lesser advantaged students are less likely to have these types of experiences if their school cannot provide them.

Goal

What will be done with my students

One of the actions that we propose to take, is that we will connect with our community partners and local businesses to host onsite field trips to help reduce the cost(s) of the field trip, which would help to increase the amount of unique educational opportunities that our students can actually experience. We will reach out to businesses that can reimburse us for the cost of transportation, leaving us to only have to pay the cost of admission.

Benefits to my students

We will measure the success of this grant, and the opportunities it has afforded us by the positive responses received from our students and families, as well as the positive outlook it will bring to our school. Our students can actually retain a great deal of factual information from the tours, as well as positive and enjoyable memories from each experience. Student-directed discussion would increase provided by the outcome of attending the field trips, which in turn will help build positive and healthy relationships between students.

Describe the Students

Our population is very diverse. We have 100% free/reduced lunch. We have free PPK and VPK funded through title 1.The blended ESE preschool program allows for the district to enroll students who are typically developing along with students who have a special needs. Our school is one where the staff is working hard to provide students with additional support to succeed academically and socially no matter what their backgrounds might be. We serve students from PPK-5th grade, as well gifted, ESE, speech and language students.

Budget Narrative

Our budget would include using approximately $1,000 on transportation, either by using PCSB school buses or charter buses depending on the location and time of the trip. We would use the remaining $1,500 on the cost(s) of student admission tickets and any other incurring costs needed for the trip.
