Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 600

Through the generous support of our donor, we have been able to create a sensory pathway in our Kindergarten hallway.  It incorporates various types of movement, which give students proprioceptive sensory input to help them stay calm and regulate their bodies.  This welcomed addition to our school has helped, and will continue to help countless children in grades PK-5 who represent both the ESE and general education population.   Many of our participants are students who may need a sensory break to reset, decompress and get their blood flowing.  Research has shown and continues to show that children learn best through movement and exploration.  Teachers have reported an increase in concentration and a decrease in classroom disruption thanks to the use of these activities.  We look forward to many more stories of student success due to the use of the sensory pathway!

Our school cannot thank you enough for your generosity in funding this amazing intervention.  It will truly impact many lives both now and in the future.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To create a classroom Calming Corner in every grade level class that addresses the needs of students requiring a higher level of sensory input as well as those who come from trauma based backgrounds.

What will be done with my students

With a mixture of empathy, flexibility and brain based strategies, teachers and students at Sunset Hills will have access to a Calming Corner in each classroom for those students needing additional sensory input in order to perform successfully during the academic day. Furthermore, this area of the classroom will be utilized to assist students who may come from traumatic situations outside the school setting.

Benefits to my students

Current scientific studies indicate that 1 in every 67 children born will have some form of Autism. A growth mindset includes students in the general education setting who may need an increase in their sensory diet in order to be successful, life long learners. By creating a calm, safe space not only for these students, but for students experiencing trauma outside the school setting we will formulate the conditions that enable children to be successful.

Describe the Students

The children who will benefit from this program include those identified as ESE, as well as low and high performers. Children on the Autism Spectrum do not conform to one particular academic skill set. Often times, these students have an above average I.Q., however they display deficits in sensory integration.

Budget Narrative

The items in my budget will be utilized to create a classroom sensory basket for each class' Calming Corner. Each teacher will also receive laminated visuals to accompany their area as well as a laminated visual schedule.
**teacher submitted a request to change budget -
. Every class has at least one student on the spectrum, and all classes would be welcome to use it. Research shows that adding the aspect of movement assist not only students who have a higher sensory diet need, but also those in the general population who may have the wiggles. See email for details.
