My goal is to introduce drones to my students. Drone flying is quickly becoming one of the highest paying careers in the STEM market. I want to use the drones to talk about engineering as well as the science behind the way drones are able to fly.

My goal for my second item is to add some fun to my word work center. Students will use the alphabet stamps to create words, sentences, and more. I have 6 students that are currently below grade level in reading and writing. They need engaging ways to work with words.
Lastly my goal for the tangrams is to create a better conceptual understanding of shapes. Geometry is one of the lowest scoring areas in our county. My goal is that with hands on learning and frequent use students will begin to see shapes in different ways and understand attributes of these shapes more proficiently.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

My students have already started to enjoy the alphabet blocks during centers. I have seen a new excitement for word work in the last week. We are using our tiles and blocks to build bridges and test the strength of objects during stem. Our Drones are arriving shortly and we  are so excited to take them for a flight and figure out what makes them work. My students are excited to come to school and learn because of your assistance in getting these materials.
Thank you for your donations.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will use one of the drones to reverse engineer during out STEM hour. Students will take turns flying the drones outside in our field. This will give them hands on learning and enrichment that will hopefully turn in to careers when they are older. We will also study the mechanics of the drone. Looking specifically at how and why it works the way it does. Relating his to creating our own hover machines using our snap circuits.

Students will use the alphabet stamps to create words, sentences, and more with the stamps during word work and centers.

students will use tangrams to build pictures using picture cards. We will use them during math and at STEM centers to create and define the shapes.

Benefits to my students

students will get a hands on understanding of one of the fastest growing and highest paid careers out there. Students are receiving scholarships for drone flying for the military as well as many other career fields. I would love to give my young girls and boys their first hands on experience with this type of technology.

Stamps will create an engaging activity where students can practice their sight words and spelling patterns.

Students will be able to frequently interact with shapes in a fun and engaging way. This will translate to their understanding of geometry. Tangrams are also helpful in growing a growth mindset and a STEM focused mind.

Describe the Students

I have 17 students 9 girls and 8 boys. I have 6 ESOL children and 1 ESE student. We have been diving into the world of STEM this year and they truly love coming to school to see what we will do next.I have 11 students that are on or above level in reading and math. I have 6 students that are below level and need enrichment in their daily curriculum to keep learning engaging and fun.

Budget Narrative

2 drones used to teach mechanics and engineering.
Blocks and tangrams purchased to use during STEM building and geometry 3d shapes. Alphabet stamps purchased to use during word work centers for my 6 lowest achieving students.
