Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 245

Thanks to the toys received from a grant sponsored by HSN, Forest Lakes Elementary was able to enhance the social skill development lab so there are age appropriate play activities for all students K-5.

The impact of the social skill development lab at Forest Lakes during the 2016/2017 school year is:

  1. 75% of students receiving tier 2 or tier 3 behavior support showed an increase in appropriate behavior based on daily behavior data and 100% indicated an increase in a positive attitude in attending school due to the social skill development lab.
  2. 33% of intermediate teachers (3-5) used the social skill development lab as a motivator for students to remain focused during the state testing this spring.
  3. 33% of the primary teachers (k-2) used the social skill development lab as a reward when the class met a predetermined behavior or academic goal.
  4. 5 teachers indicated that having access to the social skill development lab has improved their attitude about teaching.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To supplement items in our social skill development lab that is utilized by our general education classrooms as a celebration when classroom goals are met and by our self-contained ASD (autism spectrum disorder) classrooms to help in the development of their social skills.

What will be done with my students

Students will access the items in the various centers in our social development lab. The lab includes an art center, wii center, housekeeping center and game center.

Benefits to my students

Our students with autism use the lab to help with their social skill development. Our general education students use the lab as a reward for reaching a classroom goal and our students on behavior plans or point sheets use the room with selected peers when they meet their individual behavior goals.

Describe the Students

Our school is comprised of 551 students; 42.3% receive free or reduced lunch; 36 are serviced in our self-contained ASD classrooms; and 15.8% of our students are ESE (exceptional students) and have IEPs (individual education plans).
