Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students need 4 Cd players with rechargeable batteries and chargers for a functional listening center.

What will be done with my students

The students will be using the CD players at a listening center each day. This gives the students a chance to enjoy and listen to stories while following along in a story book. Students are able to choose a story of their choice, move to a quiet area and enjoy listening to a story. Story books as well as the Cd's have been purchased through Scholastic Book clubs based on the students interests. Having their own individual CD players will make sure that each student can listen to a book of their choice and on their level.

Benefits to my students

Students that may not be able to read at the level of the book, however they are still able to enjoy the story and answer comprehension questions afterwards. Students will fill out a book report on the story they listened to when they are finished. They also comment on how well they enjoyed listening to the story.

Describe the Students

The students in my classroom attend a rural school. The school is a Kindergarten through fifth grade building with around 600 students. The school has over a 90% poverty rate. The students come from all backgrounds and family make up. However, the majority of the students are ESOL students with limited English proficiency.

In this rural area students do not have access to many cultural experiences and technology at home.

Without the experiences provided by the school, some students may not be able to expand on their knowledge to the fullest. The students are always eager to learn and engage in new experiences.

Budget Narrative

The monies will be used to purchase the individual CD players, the adapter and some AA batteries for the CD players since they are portable.
