Goal

To provide a real world application of 21st Century Learning Skills as well as the standards being taught in classrooms. Students will utilize robots to practice their problem solving, speaking and listening, as well as the reading, math and science standards that they will encounter in their classroom.

What will be done with my students

Through robotic exploration, the Rockin’ Robots will be taken through the cycle of Planning, Building, Testing and Iterating as they explore different robotic challenges. Students in the Rockin’ Robots group will have the opportunity to take on different roles including: Engineer (builder), Software Specialist (programmer), Information Specialist (gets the necessary information for the team to move forward) and Project Manager (keeps the group on task). Through these roles students will have the opportunity to work together as a team in order solve robotic challenges.

Benefits to my students

The Rockin' Robots program will benefit 3rd-5th students who are involved in our coding programs that occur during and after school. We usually have about 60-80 students involved each year.

Students are expected to learn how to work in a group with different roles, to help solve coding and programming challenges. Through these challenges, students will be exposed to real world scenarios that reinforce the standards being taught in our classrooms.

Describe the Students

Our 3rd-5th grade students have a variety of learning abilities. We currently have 63 gifted students and 20 ESE students. In addition, we have 20 students who are in our speech and language program.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes funds to pay for the robots that will be utilized within our Rockin' Robots program. The Launcher and Connectors will be utilized in the different tasks the students must do in order to move through the curriculum.
