Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to integrate high-interest, science-related reading material into the classroom library, as well as enrich the students' reading at home.

What will be done with my students

The students will have access to these materials in the classroom library for independent reading time or when they finish a task early! The class set of books will be take home books. The students will be able to keep the books and will be given them before Winter Break to continue their reading and science learning over the break. The students read another book in this same series last year and LOVED it, so this should keep them engaged over the days without school!

Benefits to my students

My kiddos need high-interest, engaging texts to improve their reading AND science knowledge! In fifth grade, the students are responsible for taking the SSA - Science Standards Assessment. This assessment tests not only fifth grade standards, but topics and concepts that were taught over third and fourth grades! In order to help my students be as successful as they can be, I want to provide as many opportunities for science enrichment as I can, and these books will certainly help!

In addition, many students do not have access to appropriate texts at home. My goal for the take home books is to provide the student with a book they can call their own, as well as provide an opportunity to have a whole class discussion about the topics presented in the book.

Describe the Students

My students have my heart. I taught 4th grade last year, and looped up with my kids as well as decided to departmentalize. They are the sweetest kids I have ever met, and they DESPERATELY want to make learning gains and to be successful. We have a mixture of English language learners, students with disabilities, and low and high performers.

My school draws from a very low-income community, and due to the financial status of the area and the student population, all students receive free lunch! My school is very lucky to receive Title I funding and corporate donations, and my students are so grateful. High Point is a positive, beautiful, safe environment for children to learn in and I know that our students would be so appreciative of these materials!
