Learning is a hands on experience! We can teach kids all day, but if they do not have a chance to use manipulatives and experiment, there learning can fall behind. In kindergarten particularly, the students want to learn through play, so it is my goal to provide them with tools and items to make their "play time" educational.

Goal

Learning is a hands on experience! We can teach kids all day, but if they do not have a chance to use manipulatives and experiment, there learning can fall behind. In kindergarten particularly, the students want to learn through play, so it is my goal to provide them with tools and items to make their "play time" educational.

What will be done with my students

I would like to purchase educational STEM "toys" for my students to use during math and science. These items would be toy gears and magnetic shape tiles. During exploration time and lessons the students will get hands on experiences with building and manipulating items. These items will be used daily during science and math time.

Benefits to my students

Magnetic tiles and gears are toys that allow students to explore science, math, technology and engineering (STEM) at the same time. Magnetic tiles have a plethora of benefits. Not only does it help students with naming their shapes, but it encourages them to explore shapes and see how putting shapes together can create new shapes. Magnetic Tiles also teaches structure building and encourages creativity. The students will be creating structures and must understand the importance of a strong foundation.

Toy gears introduce students to basic engineering concepts, but also cause and effect. It makes them think through scenarios and conduct trial and error experiments to get the gears moving. It also introduces them to simple machines and how machines work.

Describe the Students

I have 18 wonderful kindergarteners that come from a variety of different background. I have 8 girls and 10 boys. Each one is unique in their own way, as is every child. I have found that this particular class thrives on hands on learning and the STEM toys would be the perfect addition to my classroom this year.

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase two sets of gears and one 100 piece set of Magna-Tiles (magnetic tiles) and another 32 piece set.
