Goal

To give ESE students (with intellectual disabilities) a hands on way to learn about biology in real time while viewing slides, including self-made slides, for example, to view microorganisms in pond water.

What will be done with my students

With this digital microscope, students will receive much greater clarity as they view their slides. Students can have difficulty adjusting their microscope and viewing slides on a stage. With this digital microscope, it can be hooked up to any computer or iPad for viewing with greater resolution and offer more options to see movement and structure of items found in nature such as cells, bacteria, organisms in pond water, small bugs on a slide and any other slide we possess. Students will be able to share viewing of the slide through the screen of a laptop or iPad.

Benefits to my students

This microscope with high magnification will allow students to more easily access the world beyond the classroom which will allow them to understand life beyond what is visible to the naked eye. This digital microscope will appeal to visual learners who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to view the structure of a plant cell, for instance. Finally, being able to see the contents of a slide on a screen allows more students to see what is on the slide with more ease, all at once.

Describe the Students

My ESE students are those with Intellectual Disabilities which are students with IQs under 70. They are cognitively lower than the average student and are learning on "access points" which are standards based on their level of functioning. These students are exposed to the same content as general education students, only they learn the material in a different way. We use hands on experiments and projects, videos, and discussions in the classroom to facilitate their varying modalities.

Budget Narrative

The greatest expense will be purchasing the digital microscope. This is the tool with which we can use prepared slides which will be created by myself, as well as pre-made slides which will be ordered from the internet. I have included 4 year accident protection in case anything were to happen to the microscope during the process of learning.
