Goal

To provide opportunities for special needs students to see how science affect our society in real time. They will introduce them to concept of renewable energy and clean energy. In addition, to provide special needs students with foundation in alterative fuel knowledge that is the wave of the future. And identify post-secondary options and living via renewable energy.

What will be done with my students

The hydrogen fuel race activity, allow students to work together in collaborative structures. It will gives them opportunities to problem solve by trying to build the fastest car. The activity will require them to take notes via a hydrogen/renewable energy lessons, record the rationale on specification on the each car, and measure on the distance the car traveled, use graphical way for students to record data directly. Furthermore, it will provide clear definition on renewable/clear energy and how it affect today's society and the future.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of this hands-on project is to get students to effectively work together. It will help the students understand the benefits of natural resources as a viable source of energy. It will help make the connection for students between science and real world issues(alterative fuel & post-secondary options), and the importance science for the future.
It will also help improve their technology skills by using computers to tracking and monitor the distance the hydrogen fuel car traveled and the amount of energy used. Moreover, it will help them problem solve to improve their cars in order to travel a great distance. In addition, the students will be able to create and give a PowerPoint presentation to their peers and teachers about their experience with this activity project. This project can be duplicated by many classes over the next couple of years.

Describe the Students

The special needs students that will be experience this project are 6-8 grade Emotional Behavioral Disable students. These students tend to lack social skills and the ability to effectively work together. Their academic performance ranges from below grade level to slightly above grade level.

Budget Narrative

The H-Racer will provides the Special Needs unit with hands-on learning in small groups where all students can participate via building cars and racing them using renewable energy. The solar Hydrogen Education Kit will help create activities geared toward storing renewable energy and understanding its role in a more conscience society. In addition, the Renewable energy monitor will help the students monitor the energy they created and help them chart this information in order to effective and efficient hydrogen fuel cars
