Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 44

My students truly enjoy these books. They are easy to use as mentor texts for writing craft as well as to reinforce particular reading skills such as main idea.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to enrich the classroom library for my students with high-interest, nonfiction texts.

What will be done with my students

This collection of books by Seymour Simon will be integrated into my classroom library. Seymour Simon is a children's author who delivers information seamlessly and in a way that engages the reader. These books also have a variety of sentence structure and lend themselves to mentor sentences

Benefits to my students

This project has many benefits. The students will be exposed to high interest, nonfiction texts. Many of the texts are on the same topics that they will be tested on towards the end of the year with the Science Standards Assessment - SSA. The students will be able to closely examine the writing that Seymour Simon has created to model and shape their own writing.

Describe the Students

My students have my heart. I taught 4th grade last year, and looped up with my kids as well as decided to departmentalize. They are the sweetest kids I have ever met, and they DESPERATELY want to make learning gains and to be successful. We have a mixture of English language learners, students with disabilities, and low and high performers.

My school draws from a very low-income community, and due to the financial status of the area and the student population, all students receive free lunch! My school is very lucky to receive Title I funding and corporate donations, and my students are so grateful. High Point is a positive, beautiful, safe environment for children to learn in and I know that our students would be so appreciative of these materials!
