Goal

The goal is to increase the graduation rate of teen parents in grades 6 - 12 by providing incentives for attendance improvement and academic achievement.

What will be done with my students

Students will complete Goal Sheets to identify attendance and academic goals for the school year. They will use a Progress Chart to track their attendance twice a month. Students will also meet with their Teen Parent Social Worker on a regular basis to review their Goal Sheets and attendance data, and discuss action steps to reaching their goals.

Benefits to my students

Tangible incentives can increase motivation which can lead to academic success. One of our biggest challenge in the Teen Parent Program is attendance. Most of the pregnant and parenting teens do not attend school regularly. As a result, they fall behind academically and sometimes drop out of school. Recognizing students for improved attendance and course work can encourage them to continue. Research shows that students often repeat an action that is rewarded. In addition, the incentives are chosen by the students so the effect will be greater.

Describe the Students

The program consists of pregnant and parenting students from various middle and high schools in Pinellas County from grades 6 - 12. This includes students coded as ESE, General Education, Unaccompanied Minor, and Homeless. We are currently providing services for 119 students.
