Goal

To get my kindergarten students thinking about STEM and how is helps us solve problems.

These kits would be used as in introduction to STEM learning/ activities.

What will be done with my students

These kits will be a great way to introduce STEM to my kindergarteners. We build things everyday in our classroom but it is building for fun. These beginning STEM kits will help us begin to think about building things to help solve problems, and build for a purpose.

With the purchase of 2 of these kits I will be able to place students in small groups and have them work together to build something. Once they have worked together to build the desired object we will be able to compare them and have meaningful discussions about worked and didn't.

Benefits to my students

Students will be working in small groups, and will be given a task to complete. This will help foster creative thinking, working together, problem solving, communication skills, team building and higher level thinking.

STEM is often overlooked in Kindergarten and isn't necessarily taught in many K classrooms. As the years go by I see more and more students coming in with a passion for science and math topics. The Kindergarten curriculum does include many science topics for us to teach and introduce to students but STEM is not one of them.

As students get older science and STEM become more heavily taught with very little prior experience. What better way to prepare these students for what will be expected from them by starting out in Kindergarten.

Describe the Students

I have 18 students, an even split of 9 boys and 9 girls. I have several students working above current expectations and few are working at current expectation levels. I have a mix of Caucasian, Hispanic and African American students.

Budget Narrative

Each kit costs $119 on the Lakeshore website. The total for 2 kits is $238. Having 2 kits would allow for all my students to be working on STEM activities simultaneously with plenty of materials to share.
