Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

Since receiving these materials, I have seen an increase in the use of picture visuals by my students.  Visual cues, daily schedules, PECS books, and visual supports for curriculum are just a few of the ways these materials have supported my classroom.  In fact, materials have been shared with other teachers in order to aide in those classrooms as well.  I have also seen a decrease in frustration levels of the students, as a whole.  This has led to a decrease in behaviors stemming from communication issues and an increase in understanding between students and teachers and well as students and their peers.  These materials will continue to work as supports in my classroom in the future, thereby positively affecting future students as well.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to maximize effective communication between students and staff through a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). In addition, students will have a better understanding of activities, schedules, and upcoming transitions throughout the day through non-verbal communication systems.

What will be done with my students

I will use a Picture Exchange System and visual timers in order to increase non-verbal communication for students in multiple areas. Students will be able to communicate wants and needs, even when they are frustrated and unable to communicate effectively or appropriately through verbal communication. Students will exchange visual pictures with the teacher and other staff in place of using verbal communication. Students will also use pictures as part of a daily schedule in order to better understand upcoming activities and events. Finally, visual timers will allow students to see the time remaining until the next activity.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to communicate wants and needs, even when they are frustrated and unable to communicate effectively or appropriately through verbal communication. This, in turn, reduces classroom disruption as well as inappropriate communication from that student. For example, when a student is frustrated, he/she can hand the teacher a "break card" and be allowed to take a "cool off" without any type of verbal communication. Students will also use pictures as part of a daily schedule in order to better understand upcoming activities and events. Finally, visual timers will allow students to see the time remaining until the next activity.

Describe the Students

My classroom is within an Exceptional Student Education Center, which focuses on Behavior Modification in order to increase academic learning. Our school is a Title 1, High Poverty School, with all students receiving free lunch and breakfast. I teach Middle School Students who have Autism and other Sensory Behavior needs in addition to Intellectual Delays. Also, most of my students have additional disabilities such as mental illness, emotional/behavior disorders, and health impairments. These disabilities all interfere with their ability to learn in the same way as typically developing students. My students need lessons that they will remember in order to retain and recall information being taught.

Budget Narrative

$100 will be used toward the purchase of specialized visual timers such as time timers, light timers, bubble timers, etc. so each student will receive a timer individualized for him/her. $150 will used to purchase visual PECS, visual schedules, prompt cards, etc.
